Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, has been in the news a great deal recently following a few well-publicised cases of it being caused by long-haul air travel. But it can also happen during pregnancy, particularly when the mother-to-be has a family history of the condition. It can be extremely dangerous and must always be regarded as an emergency needing urgent conventional medical attention.

One natural remedy that could help prevent it is garlic. You should be eating generous amounts of it – and not only because of its effectiveness at warding off DVT, but because it’s a good general antibacterial and heart protector.

If you’re going on a long journey during your pregnancy – and that includes travelling by car, train or any other mode of transport that means you’re sitting for long periods, try these simple tips:

  • Drink a glass of water every 30 minutes
  • Don’t drink alcohol, coffee or cola drinks
  • Walk about as much as possible
  • Bend and stretch you legs. Contract and relax the calf muscles. Rotate your ankles and clench and relax your toes and buttock muscles. Repeat these exercises every 15 minutes
  • Wear support stockings or tights on the plane

There are herbs and supplements which help reduce the risk of DVT from all causes:

  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Gingko biloba
  • White willow
  • Anti-oxidants
  • Bioflavonoids
  • Vitamins A, C and E
