Vomiting

What you need to know:

Vomiting which continues for more than 12 hours must always be investigated. If the victim is a baby or young child and the vomiting is severe you need immediate treatment.

If you suspect it’s due to food poisoning, contact your local environmental health officer as well as your doctor; it may be that the shop where you bought the suspect food or the restaurant where the kids might have eaten a suspect meal need to be inspected.

Maintaining fluid levels is extremely important, particularly for babies and young children. You need to give sips of boiled, cooled water every five minutes. Commercially produced rehydration fluids - which taste like rather strong mineral water - can also help, but ask the pharmacist before buying them for young children.

Much of the advice included for gastroenteritis, in this section, applies to vomiting too.

When the cause is motion (travel) sickness (or early morning sickness during pregnancy, for that matter) Ginger brings enormous relief. It can be taken in several ways:
  • As Ginger tea - take a flask and give small sips to the sufferer every 15 minutes
  • As crystallised Ginger, preferably without a sugar coating - again, give small chopped pieces every 15 minutes
  • Even Ginger nut biscuits can help
