Herbal remedies and children

IMPORTANT

When giving any natural remedy - including herbal preparations, vitamins and other supplements - to children, it is essential to make sure you use the appropriate dose. Unless otherwise stated on the package, most supplements and herbal remedies are not suitable for children under 12.

Some herbal tinctures can be given to children at a dose of 1 drop per stone of weight. You should check individual herbs in the herb directory to see if they are safe to take and from what age they can be taken.

Where herbal teas are suggested, they are okay at the following strengths:

Age (years) Dilution to make of tea
over 12's full strength is fine
6 to 12 half strength (1:1 with water)
3 to 6's quarter strength (1:3 with water)
1 to 3's one tenth strength (1:9 with water)

Babies under 12 months old:

You should see a medical herbalist or registered naturopath for advice on treating babies under 12 months old with herbal preparations.
