Scoliosis

What you need to know:

If there is a family history of spinal curvature you need to keep a sharp eye on your child’s posture. A proper assessment by an Osteopath, physiotherapist or orthopaedic specialist is the best way to pick up this condition as early as possible. Severe cases may need remedial surgery, but if mild conditions are treated from the earliest possible time, then Osteopathy, Alexander Technique and Yoga can all be effective.

The most useful Herbs:

There are no natural remedies to treat this condition, but if you also have arthritis with this condition the following anti-inflammatory herbs will help:
  • Birch
  • Black cohosh
  • Meadowsweet
  • Poplar
  • Willow
  • Devil’s claw
  • Ginger - extracts of the medicinal Chinese variety of this herb

The most useful Supplements:

These supplements are also useful anti-inflammatories:
  • Green-lipped mussel extract
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Glucosamine
  • Cod liver oil
  • Fish oils
  • Pycnogenol

Other useful advice:

Scoliosis often runs in families, so if you, your parents or grandparents have or had this condition, it’s really important to have your own children examined before they even start to walk and to have regular examinations throughout their childhood. Remedial exercises, the Alexander Technique, osteopathic or chiropractic treatment can be an enormous help if they begin before the condition gets too severe.

With early intervention, it may sometimes be possible to avoid the need for surgery. The extraordinary skills of todady’s orthopaedic surgeons are the reason why there are so few young adults with the dreadful spinal curvatures that were common just 30 or 40 years ago.

However, no complementary treatment for scoliosis in children should be done without the knowledge and agreement of the child’s consultant.
