Kyphosis

Kyphosis is forward curvature of the spine, usually caused by a deformity affecting the vertebrae. It may be (rarely) a congenital absence of a vertebral body, or the result of disease, called Scheurman’s disease, where there is wedging of a vertebral body, possibly as a result of interruption of the blood supply producing avascular necrosis. It frequently occurs in association with kyphosis - so-called kypho-scoliosis. The treatment - physiotherapy, external braces and if necessary surgery - is the same.
