Nappy Rash

Nappy rash occurs as a result of breakdown of the superficial layers of skin by contact with irritant chemicals contained in urine and faeces. Usually the problem can be resolved by frequent change in the nappies, the use of barrier creams and exposing the affected area to the air. Persistent cases may be caused by super-infection with agents such as Candida (the yeast that causes thrush) or staphylococcus (a bacterium), which will require specific treatment.
