Melanoma

What you need to know:

Nobody has an excuse these days to be ignorant about being safe in the sun. You may want to take a chance and get burned while trying to get a tan, but to allow that to happen to children is the height of irresponsibility.

They should wear the highest sun protection factor (SPF) cream - particularly if you’re on holiday in a hot country. It should be reapplied regularly as its effects are diluted by perspiration and certainly after swimming. You need to buy boys long swimming shorts and try to make all children wear some sort of cover-up when they’re playing. And they should be kept in the shade between 11 am and 3.30pm
