High Blood Pressure and Pre-eclampsia

This is a potentially serious and life-threatening condition for both mum and baby and it’s essential to follow your doctor’s advice. You can help yourself, however, by not putting on too much weight, cutting right down on salt and following all our advice on anaemia, constipation and varicose veins.

You need to eat generous amounts of:

  • Herrings – for their vitamins A, B and D, iron, calcium and other minerals, and especially for their omega-3 fatty acids
  • Apples – to reduce the risk of indigestion and for their soluble fibre, which helps fight constipation
  • Broccoli – for vitamins A and C and folic acid
  • Brown rice – for B vitamins, minerals and protein
  • Kiwi fruit – for vitamin C, fibre, Vitamin E and potassium, which fights fatigue and indigestion
  • Onions and garlic – they’re good for the heart and circulation
  • Walnuts – for protein, B vitamins and minerals, including calcium, Zinc and iron
  • Cloves – a great digestive aid, which also reduces nausea, flatulence and indigestion

Stress is often a cause of high blood pressure, so learn to take things easy by listening to relaxation tapes, doing yoga or meditation and getting regular fresh air and physical exercise.
