Hypoglycaemia

What you need to know:

There are no natural remedies or complementary therapies that can treat this condition, but a good diet, designed around your child’s individual needs and way of life is vital. You’ll get advice on this from a registered naturopath and/or your child’s consultant.

You mustn’t let your child go for long periods without food - three hours should be your limit. This is the time to encourage ‘grazing’ - eating little but often. Avoid the temptation to use high sugar snacks as a quick fix; instead, give the child more complex carbohydrates. Wholegrain cereals, oats, rice, pasta, wholemeal bread, peanut butter and baked beans are all ideal. Sweet fruits like bananas, nectarines, mangoes, all dried fruits and natural fruit juices are good sources of instant energy.
