Snoring

Snoring is amusing for everybody other than the partner of the sufferer (and the sufferer themselves once the partner takes them to task). It is caused by the flapping of the soft palate (which forms the back of the floor of the nose and the roof of the mouth) when we breathe in with our mouths open. It's made worse by obesity, nasal congestion, too much alcohol and sleeping on your back. In some cases it may be linked to a serious condition called sleep apnoea, where the sufferer stops breathing for a period and the oxygen levels in the blood drop. This causes disturbed sleep and day-time drowsiness. Snoring may be helped by weight loss, de-congestants and alcohol reduction. In severe cases surgery to the palate may help.
