Whiplash

Whiplash is the name given to injury caused by the sudden jerking back of the head and neck. It most commonly follows a motorcar injury where the vehicle is struck from behind. There is sprain of the muscles and ligaments. If there is bruising of the spinal cord or the nerve roots there may be pins and needles in the arms. Treatment is initial immobilisation using a collar and anti-inflammatory agents followed by physiotherapy. There may be persistent pain for up to a year.
