Tooth Decay

What you need to know:

More people lose teeth because of gum disease than tooth decay, so keeping gums healthy by brushing teeth properly and regularly is essential - and it’s never too young to start. Teaching them good habits as soon as those first tiny teeth appear will stand them in good stead for life - and you’re less likely to have the horror of dragging a screaming child to the dentist.

As soon as they can chew properly and safely start giving them food, which stimulates circulation to the gums and helps reduce plague, often the cause of gum disease. That means crunchy food like slices of apple, pears, celery and raw carrots. They’ll also be getting lots of vitamin C, another weapon in the fight against gum disease.

As everyone knows, sweets, chocolates and other sweet food does teeth no favours, but it’s unrealistic to expect that they’ll never want them - particularly when they get to school and you start having less control over their diet. That’s when you really should insist that they clean their teeth after every meal at home - and that older children chew sugar-free gum after lunch at school.

The most useful Herbs:

Natural medicine offers many preventative measures against tooth decay. Herbs make excellent mouthwashes - use 2 tspns per cup of water, boil for 5 mins, allow to cool and keep in the fridge. The following are very effective:
  • Echinacea
  • Lady’s mantle
  • Marigold
  • Marjoram
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Tormentil
Essential oils of myrrh, tea tree, thyme and fennel also work well as mouthwashes - just add a few drops to a glass of warm water.

Homoeopathy

The homoeopathic remedies Mercurius solubilis, Phosphorus and Nitric acid could help if you or the kids do develop gum disease. But as a preventative, the following supplements will help boost the immune system:
  • Golden seal
  • Echinacea
