Tooth Decay

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria interact with sugars in the mouth and produce acids which attack the outer enamel lining of the teeth. In order to reduce this it is important that the enamel is strong, that bacteria are eradicated and that prolonged contact with sugar is reduced. In order to strengthen enamel (which is formed during the first six years of life) it may be necessary to use fluoride supplements are where the level of the fluoride content of the water is less than 0.7 parts per million. Good dental hygiene with regular teeth cleaning starting as soon as the first teeth appear will help to prevent the build up of plaque, and reduction in the amount of sugary snacks and sweets (use fruit instead) will help to produce teeth that will last into old age.
