Oral Thrush

Oral thrush (also called Candidiasis, because it is caused by infection with the agent Candida albicans) is common in young infants, producing characteristic white plaques on the tongue and the hard palate, which produced little bleeding points when they are rubbed off. There are treatments available, but vigorous attention to sterilisation of the teats of feeding bottles may be necessary to prevent reinfection. Unlike in the adult, oral thrush in the infant does not signify underlying problems such as diabetes mellitus.
