Sleep Apnoea

What you need to know:

Complementary therapies can often help you avoid the need for surgery for this condition, but it does need professional care. Naturopathy is likely to be the most effective. A registered naturopath will be able to give you a safe and appropriate diet - including a weight-loss programme if needed - and teach the child or teenager specific breathing exercises to relieve the problem.

Aromatherapy oils can make an enormous difference, too, particularly if they’re put in a fragrancer in the child’s bedroom. To avoid the risks of fire and accident, it’s best not to use candle fragrancers for children but to buy one of the electric models, which are widely available and inexpensive. A mixture of lavender, eucalyptus and pine oils is the most effective.

For over-12s, it’s also worth trying the adhesive plastic strips which are stuck onto the nose and dilate the nostrils while the child is asleep. These are available from all pharmacies.
