Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a condition characterised by a cough producing sputum occurring daily on most days for a period of three months, on at least two consecutive years. It is a condition caused by enlarged mucous glands in the bronchi. Most commonly it is the result of exposure to cigarette smoke. Besides the cough and sputum there is obstruction in the airways as a result of inflammation. Unlike asthma this obstruction may not be reversible, and it may go on to become Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Patients with chronic bronchitis are at risk of severe exacerbations if they develop respiratory infection. They are also at risk if they keep on smoking.
