Salmonella

All the advice given for gastroenteritis (in this section) is relevant to this condition - and salmonella can be extremely serious in the young. It’s also highly infectious and some sufferers may remain carriers for many years. The major complication is that it’s a common triggering factor in the development of irritable bowel syndrome.

One of the most common causes of salmonella infection is under-cooked poultry and shellfish - again, see gastroenteritis.

So don’t let the kids eat:

  • Chicken, which shows the slightest hint of pinkness or blood when you cut into it
  • Under-cooked and raw shellfish - unless you buy from reputable fishmongers or supermarkets or eat them only in well-established restaurants which have a reputation for quality
