Coeliac disease

What you need to know:

There are no natural remedies or complementary therapies appropriate to this condition, but there’s a long tradition of the use of wheat-free and gluten-free diets in naturopathic medicine. Many cookbooks contain delicious and nutritious recipes developed for coeliacs and perfectly okay for even quite young children. Many parents fail to realise how careful they have to be to prevent cross contamination - not using the same knife and board to cut gluten-free bread as you use for ordinary loaves, for example.

Nutritional deficiencies are common in people who suffer from this condition and it’s essential that these are investigated as soon as possible as children and young people are still laying down the physical building blocks they’ll need for the rest of their lives. You may need supplements specific to your child’s particular needs and you’ll get the best advice from a registered naturopath.

The symptoms of coeliac disease also need to be taken very seriously in the young. Again a naturopath will give you this advice. See also diarrhoea and malabsorption(in this section), anaemia(blood and circulation in the chest cavity section} and osteomalacia(bones and joints section).
