Septicaemia

Septicaemia means the presence of sepsis in the bloodstream. Sepsis is the term given to the destruction of tissue by bacteria or as a result of toxins that they might secrete. It can cause collapse and multi-organ failure. In infants and young children it is frequently associated with infection by the meningococcus, the bacterium that usually causes meningococcal meningitis. Sick children showing signs of shock, with drowsiness, a fever, rapid respiration and a high pulse rate, with or without a rash, need urgent medical attention.
