Chickenpox

What you need to know:

In children, chickenpox is one of those conditions which they just have to live through. You can soothe the irritation by sponging the skin with a weak solution of warm Elderflower tea and, as with any childhood infection, it’s worth boosting their immune system by giving them more:
  • Citrus fruit - particularly the pith of oranges and apples - apricots, cherries, tomatoes and pawpaws, They’re rich in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids
  • Liver, oily fish, eggs and chicken for their high vitamin B content
  • Safflower oil, olive oil, unsalted peanut butter - they’ll love you for that - and avocadoes for vitamin E
  • Live bio-yoghurt for vitamin B
  • Green tea, a powerful anti-oxidant
In the late teens and 20s, chickenpox can be a very serious illness, causing respiratory problems and pneumonia. Asthmatics are at added risk and should be treated with antiviral drugs as early as possible; they’re frequently admitted to hospital until they recover.
