Ganglia

Ganglia are fluid filled swellings which occur over tendon sheaths, usually at the back of the wrist but they can occur over any tendon. They contain a clear jelly-like substance, and while they usually cause no symptoms their appearance may cause distress. Traditionally they were dispersed by a hefty thump using the family Bible. Medically they can be drained using a needle and syringe. Recurrence, which is common, may be discouraged by injecting the cyst with hydrocortisone. Large and persistent ganglia may require surgical attention.
