Medial / lateral collateral ligament strain

Medial and lateral collateral ligament strain or tears are common sporting injuries resulting from pressure on the lower leg to move sideways (either outwards or inwards) with respect to the upper leg, which it’s not designed to do. There is pain over the affected ligament, and swelling of the knee because of the production of inflammatory fluid within the knee joint. As with all over use injury producing inflammation and swelling the treatment is RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. When the inflammation has eased physiotherapy may help with mobilisation. As with all other sports injuries these are much more likely in the unfit: if you’re unfit for the job, don't do it - get fitter first.
