Dislocation of the hip

Dislocation of the hip, where the head of the femur is displaced from its normal position in the acetabulum, is rare in the adult (and is something that is screened for in the newborn). In the adult it usually follows trauma, such as might happen in stepping from a railway carriage on to a non-existent platform. Much more common is dislocation of the hip following a hip replacement operation.
