Cyanosis

What you need to know:

If this condition is caused by an underlying problem, of course it needs to be thoroughly investigated. It’s worth reminding anyone in charge of young children, however, that knowing the rudiments of first aid could mean the difference between life and death if an emergency like this happens because the child has swallowed a large piece of food, a building brick or any of those other scary things they put in their mouths the moment your back is turned.

The Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance run excellent courses. You need your doctor’s number pinned to the kitchen door or some other prominent place in case a babysitter or other carer is looking after the kids - and it’s worth reading some of the emergency advice in a good first aid manual. You need to read it thoroughly, though; if a real emergency arises, you may not have time to find the book and look up the appropriate chapter.
