Cataracts

Cataract is the name given to any opacity affecting the lens. This happens when the normally transparent crystalline material of the lens condenses, causing blurring of vision. It is usually a feature of ageing, and may progress to complete blindness. It requires surgery to remove the lens, which may be replaced by an artificial one.

More rarely, cataract may affect younger people following trauma, certain infections, treatment with steroid eye drops or as a complication of diabetes mellitus.
