Golfer's Elbow

What you need to know:

Your sporty 16-year-old doesn’t need to have ambitions to be the next Tiger Woods. This excruciatingly painful condition can occur following many sporting exuberances. But natural remedies and complementary therapies can often speed recovery.

Ice packs, alternate hot and cold bathing are the first step. And if the cause really was golf you’ll need to hide his or her clubs away for a few weeks and organise a few top-up lessons from a coach on technique and whether they’re using clubs which are too heavy.

The most useful Herbs:

  • Devil’s claw - as pills and gels
  • Cod liver oil
  • Ginger

The most useful Supplements:

  • Pycnogenol
  • Cod liver oil
  • Co-enzyme Q 1O
  • Vitamins A, C and E
  • Lycopene

Aromatherapy

Regular soaking in a warm bath is very soothing if you add a few drops of the essential oils rosemary and juniper.

Homoeopathy

The homoeopathic remedies arnica (in pills and as creams) and staphysagria can also help.

Other useful advice:

For complementary therapies, it’s worth trying Acupuncture for pain relief and Osteopathy and Aromatherapy massage for mobilisation.
