Sleep Disorders
What you need to know:
It’s vitally important to try to avoid resorting to powerful sleep-inducing medicines - no matter what the age of the child, they’re all available these days. There are situations with older children in which sedatives or sleeping pills may be justifiable for very short periods - bereavement, family break up and other times of extreme distress.
But many desperate mothers resort to cough medicines, antihistamines and other over-the-counter preparations in order to get their babies and toddlers to sleep through the night. This is inadvisable and unnecessary as there are natural remedies that can help.
For small children, pillows filled with Hops or lavender often work amazingly well, but you can also choose remedies from the following lists according to the age of the child.
The most useful Herbs:
- Valerian
- Passiflora
- Hops
- Lavender
- Scented geranium
- Lime blossom
Other useful advice:
Alternative therapies that might help include:
- Massage
- Aromatherapy
- Acupuncture
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Nutritional therapy
Insomniacs may also benefit from calcium supplements.
