Sinusitis

Sinuses are airspaces linked to the nose. The frontal sinuses lie above the eyes, the maxillary sinuses lie either side of the nose. They are lined by a mucous membrane and their function is to moisten the air that we breathe (as well as making our heads lighter). When the lining of the nose is swollen - as in an infection by a virus - then drainage of the sinus may become blocked, and there may be secondary infection by a bacterium. Sinusitis may cause severe pain over the affected sinus. While decongestants may help the sinus to drain - as will breathing steam - antibiotic treatment may be required to treat any bacterial infection.
