Scurvy

What you need to know:

You may find it strange to see scurvy listed in this childhood section - and indeed, in the Western World, it’s extremely rare. But it does occur in youngsters with severe eating disorders - and, sadly, that number is increasing. It can also be caused by parents with extreme ideas about diet; they’re so phobic about chemical residues that they’d rather not buy fruit and vegetables if they can’t find organic.

Yes, there is concern about the increasing amount of fungicides and pesticides on our food, but non-organic is better than none at all and depriving children of the goodness in fruit and vegetables can have dire nutritional consequences like scurvy.

Dietary changes that may be beneficial:

Vitamin C supplements may help reduce the severity of this condition, but it’s far preferable not to let it happen in the first place by giving them this vital vitamin in their food. The richest sources are:
  • Papaya
  • Guavas
  • Blackcurrants
  • Green peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Oranges
  • Cabbages
  • Cauliflowers
It’s worth remembering that juicing your own fruit and vegetables packs huge amounts of nutrients into one portion. Faddy eaters may turn their noses up at eating, for example, oranges - but you can give them the goodness of three pieces of fruit in just one glass of orange juice.
