Lichen Sclerosis

Lichen sclerosis - sometimes called lichen sclerosis et atrophicus - is a condition where there are white patches on the vulva, which are intensely itchy. They are due to changes in the elastic tissue of the vulva, when collagen replaces it. It may progress to the extent where the whole of the vulva and peri-anal region become replaced by shiny white skin which is atrophic (meaning very thin). The lips of the vulva may fuse together. Besides being intensely itchy this may be premalignant and while the itch may be helped by steroid creams, surgery may be required.
