Postmenopausal Bleeding

Postmenopausal bleeding is bleeding that occurs more than one year after the menopause, which is the day of the last period. Since it may be the presenting symptom of Cancer of the uterus it must be investigated. The most common cause is inflammation of the lining of the vagina - called atrophic vaginitis - which becomes very thin as a result of the failure of the ovaries to produce oestrogen. It can be treated with local oestrogen creams.
