Cervical Ectropion
Cervical ectropion is the name given to the presence of a bright red area on the cervix, the neck of the womb. This used to be called an erosion, because it was thought to be an area where the cervical cells had worn away. In fact it is simply the presence of cells from inside the cervix which have migrated to the outside. It is commoner in people who are on the oral contraceptive pill, and in those who have had children. It usually requires no treatment, but since these cells are more friable, they are more prone to infection and to bleeding, for example after intercourse. Treatment with cautery is effective.
