Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are made up of lymphoid tissue and form part of our body's defences. Their function is to attack invading organisms. This is why they swell up when infected either by viruses or bacteria. Some people suffer repeated attacks of infection of the tonsils and they become chronically inflamed. Under such circumstances it may be better to have the tonsils removed, but on the whole the tonsils usually do more good than harm, and are best left alone.
