Stridor

Stridor is severe difficulty with breathing in. It can be caused by an obstruction in the larynx such as a foreign body or food, or by swelling of the larynx and the vocal cords - laryngeal oedema - as a result of an allergic reaction. If it is due to an inhaled foreign body this may be dislodged by forceful compression of the stomach - the Heimlich manoeuvre.
