Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, or a sore throat, which causes difficulty swallowing. By far the commonest cause is infection by a respiratory virus. Less common is an infection by a bacterium such as streptococcus. The symptoms may be the same - pain on swallowing, fever and the production of sputum. Relief may be obtained by using anti-inflammatory agents together with decongestants, and gargles with mouthwashes to ease the pain. If infection is by a bacterium then antibiotics may be required.
