True obstruction arising in the pharynx may be due to inflammatory conditions of the tonsils which lie behind the fauces at the back of the mouth, but this is uncommon. Cancer of the pharynx can produce obstruction. This is more common in males who smoke, and the symptoms get progressively worse, and are often associated with a cough producing blood, or pain in the neck or ear.
