Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is inflammation of the epiglottis. This is a leaf shaped piece of cartilage covered with mucous membrane which acts as a lid to cover the opening of the larynx when we swallow. If it gets infected - particularly by a bacterium called haemophilus influenza - then it may swell and risk obstructing the larynx. There is difficulty swallowing as well as breathing. Leaning forward may help but urgent medical attention is required.
