Supplements - Spirulina
What Is It?
Spirulina, like chlorella,
is a type of blue-green algae, which grows freely in many seas, oceans and lakes
all over the world. It is full of Antioxidant nutrients and is often termed
as a ‘superfood’. Spirulina contains carotenoids, chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals
and essential fatty acids. It is particularly high in Beta Carotene and protein
and it contains all essential amino acids. Unfortunately, the high level of
Vitamin B12 it provides is not in the form that the body can really use properly,
so it is not a viable source.
Spirulina is also rich in
the amino acid, L-Phenylalanine, which has an effect on the appetite, libido
and mood.
Supplementation
- Spirulina supplements
are often taken instead of a multivitamin and mineral or as a tonic detox or
energy booster. Some people also use it when they are on a weight loss program.
- Good quality
spirulina supplements have originated from a specially cultivated source. These
products are free of toxins and heavy metals. Always choose a reputable brand.
- Spirulina supplements
are usually available as tablets, capsules or in powdered form which can be
sprinkled on food.
Cautions
- Generally, there
are no side effects or contra-indications from using spirulina supplements.
- If you are concerned
about weight control, it is important that you follow a sensible diet and not
rely on slimming pills as an easy answer. There are no ‘magic bullets’ that
allow you to loose weight without also changing your dietary habits. See the
section on Obesity to learn more about healthy eating.
- When this article
was written there were no well-known negative drug interactions with spirulina.
