Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is a rare condition involving severe peptic ulceration - ulcers of the stomach, the duodenum or both - in association with high levels of the hormone gastrin, which is secreted by pancreatic cells. It may be that there is overgrowth of the cells, producing a tumour called a gastrinoma (which may be malignant), or it may simply be hyperactivity of the gastrin - secreting cells. Agents which block the formation of acid (called proton pump inhibitors) may be effective in high doses.
