Gastric Polyps

Gastric polyps are usually benign growths arising from the mucosal surface of the stomach and often described as being hyperplastic (i.e. e simply an overgrowth). They are usually asymptomatic but occasionally may ulcerate and bleed if they are very large. They do not occur in young children, but can be a problem in adolescents who suffer a condition called Familial Polyposis Coli (see disorders of the large intestine in the digestive tract section) - where they may have the potential to become cancerous, and might be best removed if they occur.
