Gastric cancer
Gastric cancer - or cancer of the stomach - arises in glandular cells, and is called an adenocarcinoma. It may present with the symptoms of indigestion (dyspepsia), but the pain may be more severe and there may be associated anaemia and weight loss. It may take the form of an ulcer, or it may be diffusely spread under the mucous lining of the stomach, causing reduced contraction (so-called leather bottle stomach). It is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, exposure to nitrites and autoimmune gastritis as occurs in pernicious anaemia. Occasionally it arises, as with cancers elsewhere in the gut, from malignant change in a previously benign polyp.
