Rotator Cuff Tears

Rotator cuff tears are ruptures in the muscles that make up the rotator cuff, and are usually a consequence of degenerative change in older people, but they may be a result of trauma to adolescents involved in contact sports - particularly those with lax ligaments. Besides causing instability in the shoulder, together with pain, they may be predispose to the development of painful Arc syndrome or frozen shoulder in adult life (see bones and joints in the adult section) and recurrent dislocation (see this section). They may make it impossible to lift the arm outwards. Surgical repair may be helpful.
