Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is caused by inflammation within the capsule of the joint causing adhesions - which are strands of fibrous tissue - between the capsule and the surfaces of the bones. This makes movement very painful, and eventually impossible so the joint becomes "frozen". While it may follow trauma, most cases arise out of the blue. It may respond to treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs together with physiotherapy and stretching exercises, or it may respond to injection with local anaesthetic and steroids. Severe cases may require surgery to break down adhesions. Without treatment resolution may occur, but it may take a prolonged period of time.
