Dislocation of the shoulder

Dislocation of the shoulder means that the head of the humerus - the ball - has come out of its socket (dislocation means that the normal positioning of two bones has been displaced). This is the most common dislocation of any joint, because the ball is relatively large while the socket is relatively shallow, and since the capsule is lax the joint depends upon the muscles of the rotator cuff for stability. Dislocation can occur following a fall or other trauma, but may be spontaneous particularly in young men with lax ligaments. It may become recurrent and require surgery to stabilise it.
