Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome
Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is a condition that can have affects on any system of the body - it is caused by the presence of auto antibodies to phospholipids, part of the structure of many of our cells. It is a cause of recurrent miscarriage, and while it was thought earlier to occur in only in association with disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosis, it is now realised that it more commonly occurs as a separate disease entity. Miscarriage arises as a result of blockage of blood supply to the placenta. Women who suffer from recurrent miscarriage may wish to have their blood screened for the presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies, since treatment with aspirin and other agents to prevent blood from clotting might allow a pregnancy to go to term.
