Priapism

Priapism is a condition where there is a persistent painful erection lasting more than six hours. It may occur as a consequence of some blood diseases such as leukaemia or sickle cell disease (see blood and circulation in the chest cavity section). It may also be a side effect of one of the treatments used for impotence where a chemical called papaverine is injected into the corpora cavernosa.

While it can resolve spontaneously, it may require treatment or surgical drainage in order to prevent the development of fibrosis, which would rule out the possibility of further erections.
