Cancer of the Penis

Cancer of the penis is a disease of uncircumcised men, thought to be a consequence of poor hygiene in which the foreskin has not regularly been retracted and both it and the underlying glans (the head of the penis) cleaned. It may be preceded by an area of localised Cancer, called carcinoma in situ or the Erythroplasia de Queyrat, which looks like a purple patch. It is more common in patients who have suffered from chronic balanitis, or those who have been infected by a human papilloma virus causing penile warts.

In the early stages it can be curable using radiotherapy and surgery. It is preventable by ensuring that the foreskin, and the glans, are scrubbed squeaky-clean.
