The Oesophagus, or gullet, is a tube which, in the adult, is about 20 - 25 centimetres long and runs from the larynx to below the diaphragm (the muscle which separates the chest from the abdomen), where it enters the stomach. It is, of course, correspondingly shorter in the infant. It is made up of two layers of muscle, mucous glands and a lining of mucous membrane
