Tracheo-oesophageal Fistula

Tracheo-oesophageal fistula is the name given to an abnormal communication between the oesophagus (which carries food from the mouth to the stomach) and the trachea (which carries air from the mouth to the lungs). These both develop from the same place in the embryo, and if there is a failure of complete separation between the two a fistula is formed. Often the oesophagus fails to develop completely - called oesophageal atresia. This usually causes episodes of choking and vomiting immediately feeding is commenced. Surgical correction is required.
