Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease in which muscle shrinks and is replaced by fibrous tissue. It occurs in the oesophagus as well as in other parts of the body, such as the face. There is reduced contraction of the oesophagus, as well as increased gastro-oesophageal reflux. As with achalasia, there is increased risk of aspiration of food or stomach contents into the trachea and subsequent pneumonia.
